Winter Garden
World Trade Center Transportation Project

Contracting Agent:
Phoenix Constructors

Project Location:
New York City, NY

Project Highlights:
Atlantic Subsurface Imaging performed Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) scanning of two adjacent water locations in front of the Winter Garden, which is in the vicinity of the World Trade Center site. Atlantic was asked to analyze the block walls that were part of the cooling tunnels for the twin towers using radar in order to confirm that the walls followed the same slope below the water line and mud line that they did above the water. This was necessary because Phoenix wished to install sheeting along the wall and did not want to run the risk of driving the sheeting into the sloping wall. The sheeting was being used to hold back the low density fill that would be used to displace the water while tunneling efforts were underway. This was an interesting project because it involved creating a raft for the antenna and considerable tweaking of the control unit in order to adapt the radar for water use.
